Sinkholes

I found this Guatemalan sinkhole image on a site that seemed to suggest that it came from the Associated Press.

Here is another one from New Zealand:

Given the immediate drama of these photographs, it surprises me that sinkholes have such a dearth of representation in fiction.  Don’t these pictures immediately conjure up questions and stories in your mind?  When I see the New Zealand picture, I immediately start hearing the beginning of a children’s book that starts out something like this:

 

The earth swallowed Jimmy’s house.  Daddy says it happened because of something called suffusion.   Mama says it’s because of a curse.  I think mama is right.  The other day, I saw Jimmy …
